First Grade

Miss Butler

First Grade overview March-April

First grade is having a great year and is in full swing. Just like the Spring blooming outside. We are looking forward to all things Spring. The birds singing, St. Paddy's Day, the flowers, more daylight and the Easter celebrations!

In Reading we are discussing how to make inferences, elaborating upon what we read, drawing conclusions, going beyond what is written on the page, predicting, and seeing the scenes of a story more clearly in our minds. And finally, how to figure out an unknown word, and answer open-ended questions. The students are doing great at bringing in books from home and reading them to the class.

In Math we have been learning about money. The students have to identify the coins, making different coin combinations, using quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, and discuss the responsibility of money. We have play money we use at school. Playing store and using a play cash register at home and having their own piggy bank can be a fun way to learn money as well. We will go back to addition and subtraction facts, one way we will practice is using dominoes.

In Spelling: We have our spelling tests every Friday. We will practice ABC order, write spelling sentences and use our first grade dictionaries.

In Religion we will review the sacraments, make a collage of good works, learn about the 7 fruits of the Holy Spirit and learn about March Saints. St. Casimir, St. John of Egypt and St. Patrick and St. Joseph will be highlighted.

In Social Studies we will discuss the variety of jobs people have in the world and the duties, needs and wants, and goods and services, ie: food, clothing, machines, new roads, etc...I went to the Museum of Science & Industry and I found these great Illinois place mats that we will have fun coloring and will learn some interesting facts about our State.

In Science since Earth day is around the corner we will discuss some environmental topics such as: recycling, pollution, endangered species, and water shortages. The students have been assigned a habitat project and it will be due March 24th.
